Emergency Medicine Global Learning Exchange (EMGLEX) is a not-for-profit organization whose purpose is to support international educational exchange programming for Emergency Medicine residents and educators. It was founded with hard work and partnership built between colleagues in the United States and Italy, with hopes to welcome many other countries to collaborate with us as we move forward.
EMGLEX was founded to support countries who are just beginning their journeys towards building Emergency Medicine as a specialty by utilizing the past 50+ years of experience as a specialty in the US as a guide to help create a robust future generation of Emergency Physicians.
To expand awareness of Emergency Medicine and its value as a specialty, to provide the tools to enrich the education of future Emergency Physicians, and to improve Emergency Medical training around the world.
To influence change from within at the residency and young physician level, to develop EM as a formal specialty with consistent standards and competencies focusing on countries that have developed healthcare systems, but do not yet recognize EM as a specialty, or have done so in recent years and are in early stages of development.
To create a world where regardless of location, demographic, or ability to pay, all patients who present to any Emergency Department can be treated by a well trained, compassionate, competent Emergency Physician, and walk out of the hospital to tell the tale.
Through our flagship exchange program, residents are exposed to all aspects of EM care at a variety of hospitals. The multi-faceted rotation allows the residents to observe different environments, patients, and processes in treating cases.
In conjunction with our virtual conference, in-country programming, and many other unique educational offerings, we have created a comprehensive, in-depth, tailored program based on experience and feedback from past participants to provide a career, and life changing experience.
Inspired by her participation in multiple international exchanges, EMGLEX founder and director Dr. Alexandra Asrow created our Flagship Exchange Program with the understanding that some things are learned best by immersive personal experience. Emergency Medicine is full of hard science and knowledge, but also nuances, complexities, and subtleties that fit this description like no other.
Our ultimate goal is to help create change from within in order to transform and improve Emergency Medicine for future generations.
Through a formal one-month program, participants are exposed to all aspects of Emergency medical care at a variety of hospitals. They are then able to integrate practices tailored to their hospitals and healthcare systems when they return home. They also bring new perspective on educational methodology, organization, and didactics which can be applied to develop and enhance their home residency programs.
Furthermore, the exchange of knowledge is not one-sided. American Emergency Medicine Attending Physicians and residents are also learning from the participants about the state of international Emergency Medicine, and ways to improve care processes. American physicians also regularly make trips to provide formal Emergency Medicine programming as guest educators in the home countries of participants.
Our ultimate goal is to create change from the inside out in order to transform and improve Emergency Medicine for future generations.
EMGLEX is pleased to announce the launch of a curated lecture series intended to provide further education specifically focused on EM topics, taught by EM specialists. The conference will be offered monthly on our YouTube channel.
The series will include topic based talks, a presentation from a highlighted "country of the month," and simulation/debriefing sessions with our fellowship trained SIM experts.
