After a hiatus due to COVID-19, EMGLEX is proud to announce that our flagship exchange program has returned as of January, 2023! We encourage residents and young attendings interested in learning more about emergency medicine around the world to apply for this valuable opportunity next year! See the link at the top of the page to apply.
Please note, we do occasionally have last minute openings in the schedule, so please contact us if you would like to be on a waiting list if such a spot should open up!
As before, clinical shifts will be observation only, but as a member of a small care team consisting of either an attending alone, or with a resident as well. Participants will also benefit from a rich collection of didactics, simulation, and other special opportunities detailed below. See FAQ!
Our one-month exchange program consists of the following clinical experiences:
(Please note that all shifts will be observation-only due to US licensing regulations):
Participants are also invited to weekly didactic conferences with EM residents from multiple area residency programs
Participants will also attend one-on-one SIM lab procedure training sessions, special SIM sessions depending on academic calendar, toxicology conferences, citywide resident conferences, the Illinois College of Emergency Medicine Annual Conference, the American College of Emergency Physicians Annual National Scientific Assembly, and more based on availability.
Finally, participants will enjoy meals, concerts and social events, as well as some time off to explore the city and travel!
Participants live together in our lovely, recently gut-rehabbed EMGLEX apartment, which is fully furnished, all-inclusive, centrally located, and reserved for our use indefinitely. Program participants are required to stay in this apartment in order to keep costs reasonable for everyone.

Please reach Dr. Asrow at lexie@emglex.org if you cannot find an answer to your question or want to learn more.
The program is 1 month in duration, from the beginning to the end of each calendar month.
Emergency Medicine Global Learning Exchange flagship exchange program is conducted in Chicago, IL, USA, with other educational offerings in several countries around the world. Contact us if you are interested in an EMGLEX educational session in your home country!
We accept participants who are physicians at any level working in EM in their home country. Many countries do not yet recognize EM as a specialty so EM residency may not exist, hence this is NOT a requirement. It is simply required to be working in the ED. We are not able to accept medical students at this time as we feel having some background training is crucial to make the most of the experience.
All ages are welcome, as we encourage anyone who wants to improve their own skills at any point in their careers. Most of our participants are residents, but we have had attendings, department heads, and even a few people late in their careers who simply want to do the most for their students!
The flagship exchange program is fully OBSERVATIONAL, so you will be observing in your various practice settings, working one-on-one with an attending emergency physician. Some shifts will also include working with US based EM residents and medical students, and paramedics.
While the flagship exchange program is free, there is a cost of $1000 USD which includes the all inclusive, fully furnished apartment, and private simulation lab time. It IS required to pay this fee even if you do not choose to stay in the apartment for any personal reasons.
As above, there is a beautiful, recently renovated EMGLEX apartment arranged for your stay which is fully furnished and all expenses are included in the fee. This includes internet, central heat/air conditioning, professional cleaning, laundry, sheets/towels, fully stocked kitchen/cooking equipment/eating utensils, and repairs if needed. Each participant will have their own bed and a roommate, with multiple bathrooms and extra space for any overlapping dates at the monthly transition. All you have to bring are your clothes!
Chicago, like any major city, has some crime and some areas that are less safe than others, however as in most cases, what you hear on the news and reality are miles apart. In most areas, including EMGLEX activity locations, Chicago is a very safe place, far from what you might have seen on TV. The EMGLEX apartment is located in a safe, family friendly neighborhood, and Dr. Asrow as a native of the city does an extensive orientation to make sure you know how to stay safe and understand different parts of Chicago and surrounding suburbs.
We began in 2017 as an experiment, had a pause during covid, and have been back up and running again since January 2023!
